Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR)
Transgender Day of Remembrance began in 1999, when Transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith organized a vigil in San Francisco to honor Rita Hester, a Black Transgender woman killed in Massachusetts in 1998, and the many Trans people lost to anti-Transgender violence. Observed each year on November 20, the day has grown into an international observance, and communities across the United States now mark it with candlelight vigils, readings of the names of those lost, moments of silence, and worship services. These gatherings mourn lives cut short, bear witness to the ongoing reality of violence against Transgender and gender-diverse people, and renew a shared commitment to justice. Increasingly, many events also make space for celebrating Trans resilience and joy, reminding us that remembrance and community care go hand in hand.
